Google has rolled out a new update to Google Play Services for Android devices, enhancing media playback switching and item location sharing capabilities. This update, now available for Galaxy phones and tablets, includes the latest version 25.46 and is gradually reaching all Android smartphones and tablets.
One of the key improvements is the addition of one-tap device transfer suggestions within the media object and suggested devices in the media output switcher. This media output switcher appears when you tap the 'Media Output' button found in the media player widget of the Quick Panel. Developed since early 2023, the feature supports apps like Spotify Connect and YouTube Music, though developers need to integrate it within their applications.
Google describes this functionality as a dynamic device suggestion system: while playing music on your phone, entering your car triggers a prompt to connect to the car’s infotainment system. Upon arriving home, the system suggests switching playback to the home soundbar. Your phone continuously scans nearby devices and offers options to transfer media playback accordingly.
In addition to media improvements, the update advances item location sharing through Google's Find Hub service, which tracks devices, items, and users sharing their location. Notably, the update will soon allow sharing the location of Bluetooth item trackers with airlines to monitor lost baggage using a URL link. This capability mirrors a similar feature Apple provides for AirTags. However, Galaxy SmartTags, which are incompatible with the Find Hub, will not support this feature.
To install the update, users can navigate to Settings > Apps > Google Play Services > App Details, which directs to the Play Store page for installation.
